Jennifer Petticord, Westlake High School
District-Wide ESL: With funds from the WEF grant, I purchased over 70 bestselling and classic books in the languages spoken the district's over 120 ESL students. Examples of books include Harry Potter, Twilight, and Brown Bear Brown Bear. Providing access to these books will give our ESL students something in common with their peers, encourage family reading, and validate multi-lingualism. Thank you, WEF, for the opportunity to impliment my grant idea!

"The Westlake Education Foundation Grant has enhanced the ability of all eighth grade students at Lee Burneson Middle School to meet the goals for STEM education. Designing and building a wind turbine prototype, the related activities, and data collected in the experiments encouraged students to develop and model real life situations. The project gave the students an opportunity to develop technical talents and the entrepreneurial spirit in an educational environment. The resources provided by the Foundation are invaluable. Many worthwhile projects would not be possible without these grants. "
John Packis, Westlake High School
"A very long time ago, before we had computers in the offices or classrooms, I received a computer grant for 2 Science Office Computer systems. Each system included a computer, monitor, scanner, and printer. I believe the total value was around $3,000."
Scott Kutz and Duane Miller, Westlake High School
"The Westlake Education Foundation board and all of the members and sponsors are to be commended for affording the opportunity to let teachers enhance and enrich their classroom lessons as well as help make them authentic and genuine. The WEF grants help teachers truly pursue their ideals and visions that they would not otherwise be able to do. For that, we are very grateful and appreciative. Of course, our students are the main benefactors, and without question they have been privileged to experience a lesson that is certain to inspire them to further pursue related knowledge on their own. In a word, this grant has enabled our students to be exposed to what has amounted to a terrific learning experience in so many ways. With the combined trans-disciplinary nature of the GPS & Navigation in Surveying lesson (Honors Geometry and Advanced Technical Drawing/Design classes), as well as plans to continue incorporating this activity in subsequent years, students will only benefit even more as the seed money we were given will lead to even deeper learning as well as implementing more and newer ideas in the future. A lesson that unfolds as an application of a subject area in a creative and innovative way is a surefire way to seize the interest and curiosity of any student. This lesson did that and more! We hope you are able to continue this program and wish you great success in soliciting the support and funds necessary to continue offering grants so many more teachers are able to bring the same kind of benefits to their classrooms!"
Tom Urich, Hilliard Elementary School
"The WEF has awarded our grant monies for both our climbing wall and Geo Fitness exercise system. Both have provided out students to improve and maintain strength, agility, and cardio vascular endurance. All equipment purchased will be used for many years to come."
Mary Beth Schneidler, Bassett Elementary
“WEF grant money provided our school with a jump rope program that has very positively affected the physical well-being of all of our students. The program has also raised student awareness of their health, and has ultimately affected academic achievement. A physically strong body leads to a brighter mind.”
Debbie Gantz, Lee Burneson Middle School
“The grant money we received from the WEF allowed us to build a climbing wall at Hilliard Elementary School. The wall has served as both a visual and physical reminder of the unique collaborative opportunities available for the Art and Physical Education departments. Students created and painted Petroglyphs/ pictographs to adorn the rock climbing wall. Interested students stayed after school to design and paint the walls using paint that imitated the natural colors that would have been made and used for the authentic glyphs. Stone art was introduced in art class by Mrs. Gantz as a part of a art history lesson. Since all the students would be using the wall as a part of PE class, we felt that the integration was natural for Art and PE. We thought also that students who were involved in its creation might be better stewards of the equipment.”
Tony Hoty, Westlake High School
“The WEF offers an opportunity for young teachers to sharpen their grant-writing skills. There has been an ongoing benefit for WHBS from the equipment purchased with the grant money awarded.”
